Home by Marilynne Robinson
Home is set in Gilead, Iowa, as was Marilynne Robinson's Pulitzer-winning novel Gilead. The earlier novel revolved around a minister, John Ames, but this new novel concerns the family of his best friend, Presbyterian minister Robert Boughton. Boughton is dying and his youngest daughter, Glory, comes back to Iowa to take care of him. Her own dreams have collapsed, so the return is a convenient escape for her. Yet she's surprised when her wayward brother, Jack, arrives at the house one day. Jack has always been the black sheep of the family and the restless one who can't stay rooted. Jack, though, is facing his own dilemma with his new family, but must overcome his own demons if his dream for them is to come true. Home has received positive reviews with BookPage saying, "In fact, the trouble this prodigal son creates is palpable, but in Robinson's inspired telling, it also moves us to empathy. This makes Home a more excruciating but no less beautiful or rewarding read than its predecessor, Gilead."
