House of Holes: A Book of Raunch by Nicholson Baker
The House of Holes of this novel's title is a sexual adventureland that is accessible only through holes: a golf hole, a straw, the door of a washing machine, as well as others. It exists in another dimension, but its visitors can fulfill any fantasy, including many which are physically impossible in the normal world. Different people are willing to take a chance on the best sex they've ever had, but find it's incredibly expensive and hard to leave. The way can be paid, though, by being part of somebody else's fantasy. Nicholson Baker's novel has received mixed reviews with the Washington Post saying, "But sex is a valid, even profound topic for a novel, for it can show us who we are when we think almost no one else is watching. And humor is an essential ingredient for such a book, too, if only because without it, we’d be lost. House of Holes, though exhausting, is full of fearlessness, cheerfulness, wit and brio."
