The Hungry Tide by Amitav Ghosh
The Hungry Tide is set in the Sundarbans, an archipelago of thousands of islands where the Ganges River empties into the Bay of Bengal and a place where tides run inland for 100 miles and the number of sharks, snakes, crocodiles, and tigers outnumber humans. Piya is a scientist raised by her Indian parents in Seattle who has come to the Sundarbans in search of a rare freshwater dolphin. Kanai, a translator from New Delhi, has come to investigate his uncle's death. They are joined by Fokir, a local fisherman. These three disparate travelers take their fateful trip where the tides have swept away humanity for eons. Amitav Ghosh's novel has received mostly positive reviews with the Indian Express saying, "The Hungry Tide is a masterfully conceived and admirable book."
