I Curse the River of Time by Per Petterson

I Curse the River of Time is set in 1989 and revolves around Arvid Jansen, a Norwegian man whose life is unraveling. His marriage is ending and his mother has discovered she has terminal cancer. His mother returns to her native Denmark wanting to be alone, but Arvid can't let her go. He follows her to Denmark but is unable to forge the bonds with her that he wants. He reflects on his past and the paths he had chosen that led him to that point in his life. Per Petterson's novel has received mostly positive reviews with BookPage saying, "With a body of work that's attracting growing attention in this country, Per Petterson delivers novels that plumb the depths of character with tender insight. His latest, eloquent both in speech and in silence, is best read in the quiet hours of the night, when we're most receptive to its meditative spell."
