Indignation by Philip Roth
Indignation is set in 1951 and Marcus Messner is the 19-year-old son of kosher butcher in Newark. His father is almost mad with fear that some disastrous fate will befall Marcus, most specifically having him sent to fight in the Korean War. After a year at a local college, Marcus flees his father's madness for Winesburg College in Ohio, needing to retain his college deferment to avoid the draft. At Winesburg, Marcus bristles at his roommates and the way he is treated and the fact that he is forced to attend chapel. Marcus feels his indignation build and his feeling of righteousness about it drives him to drastic action. Philip Roth's novel has received mostly positive reviews with the Washington Post saying, "Here's a novel to be witnessed as an explosion from an author still angry enough to burn with adolescent rage and wise enough to understand how self-destructive that rage can be."
