Inkheart by Cornelia Funke
12-year old Meggie discovers that her father has the ability to bring characters alive out of books. Unfortunately, for each characters that comes out, a real person is imprisoned in the book. This explains the disappearance of Meggie's mother. The character, Dustfinger, arrives on their doorstep and wants to be read back into the book he came from, Inkheart. Other storybook villains have no interest in returning, and the trapped people must be rescued. Cornelia Funke's story mixes the worlds of fiction and reality, illustrating the unintended consequences of our actions. Inkheart has received several glowing reviews. BookPage.com says, "Inkheart is an engrossing novel that children will treasure for years to come, as much for the paths it opens to them as for the path it leads them down."
