A Jealous Ghost by A. N. Wilson
At the center of A Jealous Ghost is American post-graduate student, Sallie Declan. She's in London writing her doctoral thesis on Henry James' The Turn of the Screw. She's depressed and lonely and decides to take a break from her studies. She provides false references and secures a job as full-time nanny to the children of lawyer, Charles Masters. She decides upon meeting him that they will be married some day. When he leaves her to take care of the children while he goes to Hong Kong, her flights of imagination begin to confuse her situation with the setting and characters of James' novel. Her own babysitting past in the states should have precluded her from watching children, and her loss of control of reality creates comical and dangerous results. A Jealous Ghost has received mostly positive reviews with The Scotsman saying, "Wilson writes, as ever, with such ease and assurance that he makes his sad story credible. It is comic but also unsettling, madness depicted with the lightest of touches."
