Jeff in Venice, Death in Varanasi by Geoff Dyer

Jeff in Venice, Death in Varanasi contains two stories, ostensibly about the same jaded London journalist, Jeff Atman. In the first story, Jeff in sent to the Venice Biennial, which becomes an excuse for drinking and debauchery. He meets an American named Laura and finds himself rejuvenated, but he doesn't know for how long. In the second story, the journalist is sent to Varanasi, India on the banks of the Ganges. After filing his story, he decides to stay for several months, detached from any hedonistic pursuits. Geoff Dyer's novel has received mostly positive reviews with BookReporter.com saying, "Strikingly contemporary and utterly timeless, Jeff in Venice, Death in Varanasi is an intense, vivid trip to a pair of exotic cities and an equally provocative journey into the twisted passageways of the human soul."
