He meets an American named Laura and finds himself rejuvenated, but he doesn't know for how long. In the second story, the journalist is sent to Varanasi, India on the banks of the Ganges. After filing his story, he decides to stay for several months, detached from any hedonistic pursuits. Geoff Dyer's novel has received mostly positive reviews with BookReporter.com saying, "Strikingly contemporary and utterly timeless, Jeff in Venice, Death in Varanasi is an intense, vivid trip to a pair of exotic cities and an equally provocative journey into the twisted passageways of the human soul."
