The Last Detective by Robert Crais
Robert Crais's ninth novel about Elvis Cole is centered around the kidnapping of his girlfriend's 10-year old son while in his care. His girlfriend is devastated and angry that the violence that surrounds Cole's life has affected her family. Her wealthy ex-husband shows up with his own set of private investigators in an attempt to wrest control of the case from Cole. And Cole is horrified to find that those behind the kidnapping are from his Vietnam past, and it's up to him and his wounded partner to get the boy back. The Last Detective has gathered mostly positive reviews, and the Washington Post says, "The story is shrewdly plotted and sharply written, with not an ounce of fat on it, nor a trace of easy sentiment or comic relief."
