The Last Dickens by Matthew Pearl
The Last Dickens follows several storylines. The first follows Charles Dickens on an American tour where he's being stalked by a crazed woman and followed by a mysterious man. The second storyline concerns Dickens' son, serving with the military in India. The main storyline follows the American publisher, James Osgood, eagerly awaiting the final installments of Dickens' last novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, only to learn that Dickens had died and the end of the novel is missing. In a desperate attempt to save his dying business, Osgood, and his secretary, Rebecca Sand, travel to England in search of the missing novel, only to find themselves plunged into mysteries and danger among all classes of English society. Matthew Pearl's novel has received mostly positive reviews with the Seattle Times saying, "Overall, though, Pearl remains notably sure-footed as he lays out his complex tale. Of course, the book's conclusion can't be revealed here - though it's safe to say that Pearl has constructed an ingenious ending to the enduring mystery of the last Dickens."
