The Last Kingdom by Bernard Cornwell
The Last Kingdom begins with a young boy, Uhtred, captured by Danish invaders in Northumbria in the ninth century. Uhtred stays with the Danes for years, following their wars and conquests, until he returns to England. He is torn between thinking of himself as Danish or one of the Saxons. He eventually throws his lot in with a young Alfred the Great. Bernard Cornwell begins a new series of books telling the story of Alfred the Great, the wars with the Danes, and the swords of savagery of the age. The Last Kingdom has received positive reviews with the Sunday Sun saying, "The book is a page-turner and if you love historical novels involving the clash of swords on shields then this is the book for you."
