Liars and Saints by Maile Meloy
Liars and Saints, Maile Meloy's debut novel, tells the story of the Santerre family from World War II to the present. The story starts with the marriage of Teddy and Yvette before he's sent off to war and follows the stories of their marriage and their offspring for the next four generations. It's a Catholic family with Yvette the most devout. It's the secrets and lies, told with the best intentions for good, that provide much of the drama and strife. Maile Meloy tells the story through different characters over the years, and lets each provide a different perspective on the family and the times it lives in. Liars and Saints has received mostly positive reviews. The Cleveland Plain Dealer says, "Here's a book to remind us that ordinary people find themselves in wild trouble often enough and that the world seldom ends because of it."
