The Lighthouse by P. D. James
Adam Dalgliesh returns in P. D. James' The Lighthouse, called to investigate a murder on the secluded island of Combe off the Cornwall coast. Combe Island is a retreat for the privileged who need a remote place to de-stress, and the number of people on the island is kept to a minimum at all times. A writer is found hanged on the island, and Dalgliesh quickly determines that most everyone on the island has a motive, and then another murder is committed. Dalgliesh is accompanied by Detective Inspector Kate Miskin and Sergeant Francis Benton-Smith. Each them bring worries and problems from their personal lives. Sars emerges on island, cutting it off even more with a murderer at large. The Lighthouse has received positive reviews with the London Times saying, "For all the agreeably nervous-making gothic scenery, the swirling mists and sinister minor characters, the greatest pleasure James offers us is the spectacle, one seldom presented in fiction, of two fine minds working: one is Dalgliesh's, the other is her own."
