Little Children by Tom Perrotta
Little Children refers to a group of adults trapped in their suburban lives. Sarah is an ex-lesbian and lapsed feminist bewildered by a domestic life she never imagined and with a husband more interested in internet porn than with her or their child. She falls for Todd, a handsome stay-at-home dad who claims to be studying for his third attempt to pass the bar exam, but is really listless and lost in life. Sarah studies the other members of their suburban crowd, the mothers who are anal retentive about everything, including scheduled times for sex, and fathers whose energies seem directed everywhere besides their families. Her affair with Todd and a convicted child molester moving into their neighborhood throws all their lives into turmoil. Tom Perrotta's novel has received mostly glowing reviews. The Washington Post says, "Little Children is a greatly auspicious and instructive encounter with the dread world of maturity."
