Loop Group by Larry McMurtry
In Loop Group, Maggie Clary has just turned 60. She's depressed by her age, having an affair with her therapist, and leads a ragtag "loop group" which dubs sounds for B-grade movies. Her three daughters bother her constantly with their marital problems and her love of shopping is sending her deeper into debt. Her solution? Road trip! She and her friend since childhood, Connie, head from Los Angeles to her aunt's chicken ranch in Texas and back again. Unfortunately, the trip leaves with her maxed-out credit cards, no job, and her daughters' problems worsened in her absence. Maggie and Connie struggle to find their proper place in a world where they refuse to admit that 60 is old. Larry McMurtry leaves behind the old West to return to a novel about modern women as he did in Terms of Endearment. Loop Group has received mostly positive reviews. BookPage says, "This is more of a 'chick book' than many of his previous novels, but his biting and insightful humor is still evident in this honest portrayal of L.A., Hollywood and two Valley Girls approaching their 'advanced years.'"
