Lost Souls by Michael Collins
In Lost Souls, a 3-year old girl is apparently the victim of a hit-and-run accident on Halloween night in a small Midwestern town. A local police officer, Lawrence, finds the body. The prime suspect appears to be the local high school quarterback, a local hero who can bring notoriety to the down-on-the-luck town. Lawrence initially goes along the mayor and police chief with a cover-up to divert attention from the football player, but he gets uneasy with it and decides to dig deeper for the truth. In doing so, he unleashes events that will tear the town apart, and perhaps the small shell of his life he calls his own. Michael Collins' novel has received mostly positive reviews with the Rocky Mountain News saying, "Collins takes what could be mundane cliché and transforms it into a masterful tale of one man's struggle to understand himself and recover from the painful losses of his past, all the while forcing us to confront the difficult secrets that shape our American lives."
