Love by Toni Morrison
Love centers around the women involved in the life of Bill Cosey, dead for decades as the novel opens, but once the wealthy owner of a famous resort. His widow, Heed, and granddaughter, Christine, still live in the old mansion, but share a mutual hatred as they continually fight over their inheritance. Into their lives comes Junior, a young woman just out of prison who takes a job as Heed's secretary. She plots the two women against each other for her own benefit. The story also concerns Chistine's deceased mother, May, a prostitute named Celestial, and the resort's cook. As secrets of Bill Cosey's life emerge, the effect he's had on each woman's life becomes better understood. Toni Morrison, winner of the Nobel Prize for literature, explores the role love, and hate, play in the lives of women and how the past, subjective as it may be to each person, shapes who they've become. Love has received mostly stellar reviews. The Cleveland Plain Dealer says, "For its lessons, Love deserves to be read. For pure pleasure, it deserves to be read more than once."
