Love and Other Impossible Pursuits by Ayelet Waldman
In Love and Other Impossible Pursuits, Emilia Greenleaf is a Harvard-educated lawyer who has an affair with a senior lawyer, who leaves his wife to marry her. They have a cushy life in Manhattan's Upper West Side, and have a baby together who dies just after birth. She's distraught and upset by all things maternal, and her husband also comes with a son, a bright preschooler named William. Emilia has to take care of William one afternoon a week, and uses the time to undermine Williams mother's authority. Her marriage is threatened by the strain of Emilia's self-blame for the baby's death and compounded by the divorce of her own parents. In order to save her family, she must find the love she wants as the tether to bring her back to the live she loved. Ayelet Waldman's novel has received mostly positive reviews with the San Francisco Chronicle saying, "And no matter Emilia's state (furious, resentful, at peace or otherwise), she's always sharp, wickedly funny, opinionated and cheerfully bitter, lending depth and energy to this wise, entertaining book."
