Lucky Girls by Nell Freudenberger
Lucky Girls is a collection of five short novellas, with each story concerning a young American woman living in Asia. Their privileged lives allow them the luxury of travel and experiencing foreign lands, but each character must deal with the cultural shocks and emotional upheavals their lives abroad bring. The women deal with different issues such as an affair with a married man, the breakup of a parents' marriage, maternal abandonment, and correspondence with a Vietnam veteran with a secret past. Nell Freudenberger's book uses the geographical dislocation of these woman to mirror their own emotional isolation.
