The Minotaur by Barbara Vine

The Minotaur is set in the 1960s when Kerstin Kvist arrives at Lydstep Old Hall, a country estate inhabited by the Coswell's, a dysfunctional family locked in a power struggle. She's hired as a companion to the only son, John, who suffers from some sort of mental dysfunction, and he's usually tranquilized heavily by his mother, a widow who can barely afford the place. They are joined by three daughters, one whom is engaged and two others who are sleeping with the town lothario. A fourth daughter who controls the money comes and goes with disdain for the rest of them. There's a locked and creepy library, the father's will, madness, and murder. The Minotaur has received mostly positive reviews with the Sunday Times saying, "This is Vine at her idiosyncratic best, with her compelling trademark world of distress and disorder."
