Monkey Hunting by Cristina Garcia
In 1857, Chen Pan leaves his family farm in famine-stricken China to make his fortune in Cuba. Little did he, and the other young Chinese men who volunteered, realize that he had signed himself into slavery on sugar plantations in Cuba. Ten years later he makes his escape, sets up his own business in Cuba, marries, and starts a family. Monkey Hunting follows the story of Chen's descendants, part Chinese and part Cuban, as they try to find their place in the world. Each chapter, closely linked to the previous one, is another story in the generations of this family. The Denver Post says, "The writing in Monkey Hunting is crystalline, occasionally surreal and nothing short of lovely."
