Mrs. Kimble by Jennifer Haigh
Jennifer Haigh's debut novel, Mrs. Kimble, tells that story of three women, all of them married to the same man at different times. Ken Kimble is crude, misogynistic, and self-centered but smooth enough to say just the right things to seduce young, needy women. The novel is told in three parts, each by one of the wives. It's the story of how women can delude themselves and feel incomplete without a husband. Ken Kimble treats them all poorly and leaves their lives devastated until the women find a way to make a life on their own. Garnering both praise and criticism, the Washington Post says of Mrs. Kimble, "Haigh certainly has succeeded in creating a trio of memorable characters."
