My Kind of Place: Travel Stories from a Woman Who's Been Everywhere by Susan Orlean
My Kind of Place is not a typical travel book with a listing of sights that were seen or amenities that were disappointing. Instead, Susan Orlean, a staff writer with The New Yorker magazine, recounts her experiences and the people she's met in her myriad journeys, finding the underlying story that highlights both our diversity and universality. She climbs Mt. Fuji, plays baseball with Cuban Little Leaguers, visits an independent grocery store in New York City and a taxidermy convention in Illinois in some of the individual chapters in this book. My Kind of Place has received mostly positive reviews with the Rocky Mountain News saying, "Nonetheless, readers will find much to admire in this collection. Orlean has brought disparate places to our doorstep, and readers of My Kind of Place can't help but feel it's just that: a book they'd like to live in, if only for a short while."
