My Latest Grievance by Elinor Lipman
My Latest Grievance is set in the 1970s at Dewing College, an all-girls school in Massachusetts. 16-year old Frederica has grown up in the college and eaten most her meals in the dining hall. Her parents are both professors, houseparents, and union leaders. They're so politically correct that they treat Frederica as an equal, but she sees them as boring and uncool. She longs for a life with some sense of adventure and excitement, and when her father's first wife comes to the school to work, she finds a new role model. Laura Lee French is electric, outgoing, and definitely her own woman. She creates hilarity and havoc on campus and ultimately scandal. But she's a refreshing change from Frederica's dull life. Elinor Lipman's novel has received mostly postive reviews with the London Times saying, "Frederica is an unalloyed delight, and her mordant narrative drives this sharp, stylish book forward at a terrific pace."
