The Mystic Arts of Erasing All Signs of Death by Charlie Huston

The Mystic Arts of Erasing All Signs of Death begins with Web Goodhue down on his luck and not in a hurry to change anything. He's been mooching off his tattoo artist roommate who informs him that his free ride is over. Web finds a job with a company that cleans up crime scenes and other disgusting messes. One of his jobs is to clean up the scene of a Malibu suicide where he meets the victim's daughter and falls for her. When she calls him in the middle of the night to clean up a motel room where something went obviously wrong, he knows better, but he's so charmed by her that he agrees. Unsurprisingly, this incurs the wrath of parties he doesn't know, and now he must save himself. Charlie Huston's novel has received positive reviews with the Washington Post saying, "The novel had me laughing out loud many times, but of course, like all the best comic fiction (Catch-22 and Portnoy's Complaint come to mind), at bottom it is deadly serious. Life is violent, messy and all too short, and laughter is the best revenge."
