The Newlyweds by Nell Freudenberger
In The Newlyweds, Amina is a young Bangladeshi wanting an American husband so she can have a better life for herself and her parents. After an internet courtship with George, an engineer in Rochester, NY, she marries him and moves into his house. George and Amina quickly find a distance in their relationship, but Amina starts the process for American citizenship so she can bring her parents to live with them too, if she can get George to agree. Amina tries to adapt to an American lifestyle, but she misses her family and the familiar culture of Bangladesh. An uncovered secret George has kept from her gives her an incentive for a trip back home, and perhaps a rendezvous with an ex-lover showing renewed interest in her. Nell Freudenberger's novel has received mostly positive reviews with the Portland Oregonian saying, "Freudenberger is one of the wunderkind, praised by The New Yorker, and her prose proves her to be worthy. Clear, smart, lyric in a way that slows down important moments, she never calls attention to her words and we slip easily and willingly into her world. The novel is suspenseful and surprising, fully realized, and I found that when I had to set it aside, I was pining to get back."
