The Night Strangers by Chris Bohjalian
In The Night Strangers, Chip Linton is a commercial pilot who must ditch his plane in Lake Champlain after hitting a flock of geese. Chip survives, but 39 people die, leaving Chip with guilt and PTSD. Looking to start a new life, he moves his wife and twin 10-year-old daughters to a small village in New Hampshire where they buy an old Victorian house. Chip finds a door in the basement that apparently goes nowhere, but it's secured by 39 bolts. The girls start hearing sounds of people drowning and local women who call themselves herbalists take an unusual fascination with his girls. Chris Bohjalian's novel has received mostly positive reviews with the Washington Post saying, "Bohjalian turns the screw right up to the unexpected ending and an epilogue that’s truly shocking. That thump thump you hear as you read is only your heart leaping from your chest."
