The Night Watch by Sarah Waters
The Night Watch begins in London in 1847, and centers around a group of individuals with intersecting lives struggling with postwar life and relationships. Kay is a butch lesbian who wears men's suits looking to pick up women, and tolerated by society only because of her heroism during The Blitz. Helen and Viv work together at a dating company, and Viv's brother Duncan spent the war sharing a cell with a conscientious objector. Sarah Waters tells the story of both men and women, gay and straight, moving it backwards in time through the war to show how their actions and interactions created their present lives. The Night Watch has received positive reviews with The Independent saying, "The Night Watch is sharply and compassionately observed, richly coloured, and compelling to read."
