Nightwoods by Charles Frazier
In Nightwoods, Luce is a young woman who has had a hard life. She lives an isolated life in an abandoned lodge in 1960s Appalachia. When her sister, Lily, is murdered by her husband, Bud, Luce takes in Lily's young twins. The twins have lived a life of abuse at Bud's hands, and have become reclusive and violent themselves. With the help of a good lawyer, Bud beats the murder rap and comes looking for his children. He believes they know where Lily hid the money that Bud had amassed. Luce must not only protect the twins, she knows Bud won't hesitate to kill anyone who gets in his way. Charles Frazier's novel has received positive reviews with Entertainment Weekly saying, "Nightwoods is no typical thriller. It hits hard because you come to care so much about the characters, all of them drawn with that precise enchanted prose. By the book's climactic scenes in the shadowy mountain forest that gives Nightwoods its title, the unhurried, poetic suspense is both difficult to bear and impossible to shake."
