Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult
Nineteen Minutes begins with 17-year-old Peter Houghton going on a shooting rampage in the high school in Sterling, New Hampshire. In nineteen minutes, he kills 10 people with athlete Matt Royston, one of his tormentors, apparently being his last victim in the locker room. Also present in the locker room is Josie Cormier, a girl who used to be Peter's friend, but abandoned him in favor of running with a popular crowd. Josie has no memory of what happened, and her mother presides over Peter's trial. As the events that led up to the tragedy are uncovered, it tears the small town apart as both children and adults are surprised by others' actions and behaviors. Jodi Picoult's novel has received positive reviews with the Rocky Mountain News saying, "Impressively, Picoult doesn't make anything about Nineteen Minutes neat or easy or comfortable. Part of what makes the novel so difficult to set down, besides Picoult's smooth prose and driving narrative pace, is that so many of the characters' emotional battles strike unquestionably close to home."
