The Odds by Stewart O'Nan
In The Odds, Art and Marion Fowler have been married 29 years, but their marriage may be at its end. Art has lost his job, they're deeply in debt, and they're about to lose their home to foreclosure. Marion is ready to leave Art, but he convinces her to take a second honeymoon to Niagara Falls. He's taking the gamble that the weekend will save their marriage, so he books them into the bridal suite. He's also cashed out their life savings, and is convinced he can win enough money in the casino to solve their financial problems. Stewart O'Nan's novel has received positive reviews with the Los Angeles Times saying, "All of this could make for rather grim melodrama, but not in O'Nan's hands. He brings lightness to every scene, while still making the characters tremendously real, recognizable yet fresh. He works in the micro - the novel slips in under 200 pages - writing close, with fine detail."
