On Bullshit by Harry G. Frankfurt
In On Bullshit, Harry G. Frankfurt, a professor of philosophy at Princeton University, explores the cultural impact of bullshit and its difference from outright lies. He looks at the philosophical implications of it and how its left the citizenry cynical of those who specialize in it: advertisers, public relations, and politicians. In this way he feels that bullshit is worse than a lie since its relationship to the truth can be hard to ascertain. On Bullshit is a short book, only 67 pages, and has received mixed reviews. The New Orleans Times-Picayune says, "On Bulls--t is both very funny and refreshingly unpedantic, whether Frankfurt is explaining the concept of verbal hot air or the 'art' that is the province of the 'bulls--t artist,' or magisterially dismissing the moral aspects of the question for the moment."
