One Fifth Avenue by Candace Bushnell
One Fifth Avenue refers to the landmark co-op building in Manhattan and it is the setting for Candace Bushnell's fifth novel. Instead of sex in the city, the characters are more interested in real estate and status. The penthouse at One Fifth Avenue becomes available as its wealthy and elderly owner dies during a storm. At the same time, famous actress Schiffer Diamond returns to her home in the building and her ex-lover Philip Oakland still lives in the building, but he's being distracted by his young, beautiful, and ambitious assistant, Lola Fabrikant. Mindy and James Gooch live in the smallest and least desirable apartment. James also has the eye for Lola while Mindy is trying to finagle getting part of the penthouse apartment. Paul and Annalisa Rice, newly-made billionaires, have their own sights set on the penthouse. One Fifth Avenue has received mostly positive reviews with USA Today saying, "Carrie Bradshaw wannabes as well as women (and men) near Bushnell's age - she turns 50 this year - will be pulled into this refreshing and highly entertaining novel about the power of money, sex and celebrity."
