Her complex relationship with her mother, which provided for much of the inspiration in her fiction, is detailed within this book, as well as the misfortunes, coincidences, superstitions, and personal choices that have constituted her life. Presented as a series of autobiographical essays, she details the effect the different roles of daughter, writer, and woman have had on her life.
