The Other Hand by Chris Cleave
The Other Hand finds Andrew and Sarah O'Rourke's marriage threatened by her affair, so they take a holiday to a beach in Nigeria. There they meet where they encounter the teenaged Little Bee and a group of violent men. Andrew and Sarah are forced to make a choice to save the girl's life. Andrew refuses, but Sarah agrees. Little Bee eventually makes her journey to England and escapes from a detention center. She calls the only people she thinks can help her, the O'Rourkes. Her contact leads to disaster and upheaval, as well as uncovering secrets as Little Bee and Sarah must adjust to their new lives. Chris Cleave's novel has received mostly positive reviews with The Independent saying, "Besides sharp, witty dialogue, an emotionally charged plot and the vivid characters' ethical struggles, The Other Hand delivers a timely challenge to reinvigorate our notions of civilised decency."
