The Painter of Battles by Arturo Perez-Reverte

The Painter of Battles of this novel's title is Andres Faulques, a war photographer who's retreated to the southeast coast of Spain. He's spend his times painting murals on the walls of a tower overlooking the sea. The murals include paintings of famous war photographs as well as photographs he has taken. One day a man arrives at the tower and announces his intention to kill Andres. He claims to have been the subject of one of Andres' iconic photographs taken in the Balkans and that it ruined his life. This spurs Andres to remember his life and career and his love for an Italian woman who traveled with him. Arturo Perez-Reverte's novel has received mostly positive reviews with the London Times saying, "For all of us. Perez-Reverte is an accomplished writer. This is his best book yet, and the best thing I have read all year."
