Paper Trails by Pete Dexter
Before he became a bestselling author, Pete Dexter was a columnist for the Philadelphia Daily News and the Sacramento Bee. Paper Trails is a collection of 82 of his columns from the 70s and 80s that appeared in newspapers and magazines. Some of the columns express his outrage at the violence and corruption he saw, others are full of humor and insight at the minutiae of daily life. The pieces are not arranged chronologically and serve as windows into different periods and facets of American life. Paper Trails has received mostly positive reviews with the Washington Post saying, "But for riveting storytelling and insight into people and circumstances that most of us either take for granted or can't see, Paper Trails is what great newspaper writing is all about."
