Past Imperfect by Julian Fellowes
Past Imperfect begins with multi-millionaire Damian Baxter summoning the narrator (who is never named) to his mansion and asking him for a favor. In their younger days, Damian and the narrator were partying chums, and Damian in particular was successful in bedding upper class women. Damian and the narrator eventually had a falling out and lost touch with either other's life, but Damian is dying with no male heir since he was rendered infertile after a bout of mumps as a young man. He believes he has a son with one of the women he bedded in his younger days and wants the narrator to delve into their past and find out which of the women might have fathered his son. Julian Fellowes novel has received mixed reviews with The Guardian saying, "Past Imperfect has its moments: it is amusingly written, ends neatly, quietly subverts the surface stereotyping of its characters, and will have a certain kind of social historian swooning with pleasure."
