The Plague of Doves by Louise Erdrich
The Plague of Doves is a set of stories centered around the town of Pluto, North Dakota and its neighboring Ojibwe reservation and covering the span of just over a century. In 1911, a family is murdered in Pluto with the only survivor being an infant, and a group of Indians is falsely accused of the crime and lynched. Over the generations, marriages between the whites and Indians intertwine the lives of the two communities. Evelina Harp is descended from both one of the Indians who were lynched and one of the white men who did the lynching. She goes in search of stories in an attempt to understand the murder whose ramifications still rumble through the lives of the people in Pluto. Louise Erdrich's novel has received positive reviews with the Raleigh News & Observer saying, "The Plague of Doves is rich with unforgettable stories."
