The Postmistress by Sarah Blake
The Postmistress of this novel's title is Iris James, her occupation in Franklin, a town on Cape Cod, in 1940. It's a job she takes seriously, which is why her refusal to deliver a letter to a local home was not a decision she undertook lightly. At the same time, Frankie Bard is reporting on the London Blitz with Edward R. Murrow. She meets Will Fitch, a doctor from Franklin who has come to help with the wounded. He gives Frankie a letter for her to deliver if she ever gets to Franklin. Frankie's reports of Jews fleeing across Europe ahead of the Nazis brings the war home to Franklin, making it difficult to ignore the horrors of war in Europe. Frankie's arrival in Franklin, along with the letter she's to deliver, threatens to upset the false peace of the tiny town. Sarah Blake's novel has received mostly positive reviews with BookReporter.com saying, "Sarah Blake's novel is an intelligent read, and her exhaustive research is evident, giving the book a thorough cloak of accuracy in which mood, timbre and setting are never broken."
