The Promise of Happiness by Justin Cartwright

At the center of The Promise of Happiness is the Judd family, led by the father, Charles, who's been forced into retirement and moves with his wife, Daphne, from London to Cornwall. Their eldest and beloved daughter, Juliet, has just been released from prison in New York for art theft, bringing shame and embarassment to the family. Their other two adult children are a dot com millionaire marrying his pregnant girlfriend and a daughter with a drug problem and a married man for a lover. Charles finds himself angry at his world, his family, and his lot in life, and must find a way to make peace with it all to keep the family together. Justin Cartwright's novel has received stellar reviews with the Independent calling The Promise of Happiness "extraordinarily bold" and "a funny, angry, moving novel."
