The Rain Before It Falls by Jonathan Coe
The Rain Before It Falls begins with a woman named Gill learning of her Aunt Rosamond's death. Rosamond had no children, so she bequeathed her estate to Gill and her husband, as well as to someone named Imogen. As executor of the estate, Gill is supposed to deliver a series of cassette tapes and photographs to Imogen. The photographs are of nothing extraordinary, but Gill is unable to find Imogen. She listens to the tapes hoping to find clues for where she might find her, and discovers an unknown family story of secrets and tragedy, eventually learning Rosamond's relationship with Imogen. Jonathan Coe's novel has received mixed reviews with The Telegraph saying, "The Rain Before It Falls is a work of maturity."
