Reamde by Neal Stephenson
In Reamde, Richard Forthrast is an ex-draft dodger, ex-marijuana smuggler who has founded a Fortune 500 company with the world's most popular multi-player online video game called T'Rain. T'Rain is so popular that people have found a way to convert T'Rain money to real money. Chinese hackers, though, have created a virus called Reamde that encrypts players' electronics files and holds them for ransom. This rush for money, both real and virtual, involves Russian mobsters, government intelligence agencies, jihadists, and Richard trying to protect his empire. Neal Stephenson's novel has received positive reviews with the Washington Post saying, "In less masterful hands, this pile-up of implausible coincidences, madcap romance, technological mayhem and nail-biting suspense might have been a train wreck, but Stephenson pulls it off. Reamde has one of the most satisfyingly over-the-top endings of anything I’ve read in years."
