Red Hook Road by Ayelet Waldman
Red Hook Road begins with a car accident that kills a couple, John Tetherly and Becca Copaken, on their wedding day. Their families come from different backgrounds. John's family is a middle class family from Maine while Becca comes from a wealthy New York family who spend their summers in Maine. Over the course of the next four summers, the families interact while trying to deal with the loss of John and Becca. A marriage unfolds, relationships form, and comfort is found in daily moments. The families find that life marches on, but never the same as it had been. Ayelet Waldman's novel has received mostly positive reviews with BookPage saying, "The danger facing any novelist wrestling with the subject of unfathomable grief lies in allowing honest emotions to spill over into excessive sentimentality. In telling a story charged throughout with intense emotion, Waldman navigates that boundary with confidence and empathy."
