Rhino Ranch by Larry McMurtry
In Rhino Ranch, Larry McMurtry brings back Duane Moore and the town of Thalia, Texas for the last time, in what he says is probably his last novel. After his wife leaves him, Duane makes his way back to Thalia. The change coming to town is a rhino ranch. Female billionaire K. K. Slater is importing endangered black rhinoceroses in an attempt to save the species. Duane becomes friends with one of the rhinos and his old friends, Boyd Cotton and Billy Lee Baxter, take jobs working security at the ranch. Duane finds himself marginalized in town and with his family, feeling the loneliness of old age setting his life apart from others. Rhino Ranch has received mostly positive reviews with BookPage saying, "In Rhino Ranch, McMurtry gets back to what he does best: the dead-on depiction of this small Texas town and its quirky inhabitants who immediately engage the reader in their less than perfect lives. As Duane’s lady friends and wives disappear or die, he waxes nostalgic about what he might have done differently-but the reader knows that when he, too, is gone, the town of Thalia will be the worse for his passing."
