Room by Emma Donoghue
Room is narrated by five-year-old Jack, and his entire life has been lived in the same room. His Ma has done her best to make it an interesting and vital life for Jack, but the truth is that they're prisoners in a 12-square-foot shed. Their captor is Old Nick, Jack's father, who refuses to share Jack's mother with the rest of the world. It's the only life Jack knows, and he's happy and comfortable with it. His Ma, though, dreams of freedom and returning to the outside world. Emma Donoghue's novel has received a Booker nomination and positive reviews with the Boston Globe saying, "Room is likely to haunt readers for days, if not longer. It is, hands down, one of the best books of the year."
