Sailing the Wine-Dark Sea by Thomas Cahill
Sailing the Wine-Dark Sea is Thomas Cahill's fourth book in his Hinges of History series. Cahill chronicles both the history and legacy of the ancient Greek civilization, and how it's provided the roots for many aspects of our modern society, such as language, science, mathematics, culture, arts, and democracy. It would also include militarism and the idea that citizenship and leadership should only be entrusted to men. He also includes excerpts from many Greek texts. Sailing the Wine-Dark Sea has received mostly positive reviews with the New York Times saying of Thomas Cahill, "He is a talented writer, and his tour of Greek culture is a triumph of popularization: extraordinarily knowledgeable, informal in tone, amusing, wide-ranging, smartly paced."
