Sappho's Leap by Erica Jong
Very little is known about the Greek poet Sappho except what remains of her poetry. Erica Jong (author of Fear of Flying and Fanny) has created a fictional account of her life in her novel, Sappho's Leap. Born to an aristocratic family on the island of Lesbos, Sappho found a talent for poetry at a young age and love for the poet Alcaeus as a teenager. The baby she bears with him is taken from her and she is married off to a wine merchant instead. Once the merchant drinks himself to death, Sappho sets out on a journey to find Alcaeus and her daughter. Her travels take her to the Oracle of Delphi, the Land of the Amazons, to Hades, and Egypt. Along the way she discovers the seductive power of her poetry and her fondness for sexual escapades with both men and women. The reviews for Sappho's Leap have been tepid at best.
