Second Honeymoon by Joanna Trollope
In Second Honeymoon, Edie Boyd is a mother losing her children as the youngest of her three children, 22-year old Ben, leaves home to move in with his girlfriend. Edie, who has defined her life as the necessary cog in her children's lives and suddenly feels unnecessary and unimportant. Her husband, Russell, is glad to be freed of daily parental roles and looks forward to having Edie to himself. She rebuffs him, though, wanting her children to need her instead. Her on-and-off actress career lands her a plum role in an Ibsen play just as the children begin to make noises to come home again, and Russell tries to fend them off. The children find their adult relationships trying, compounded by issues of money, ambition, and responsibility. Joanna Trollope's novel has received positive reviews with The Independent saying, "This novel is utterly absorbing, constantly surprising, and often extremely funny."
