The Secret Purposes by David Baddiel
The protagonist of The Secret Purposes is Isaac Fabian, a German Jew who flees to England just before the outbreak of World War II. Instead of finding freedom, he is interred with other Germans, mostly Jews with a few Nazis, on the Isle of Man. June Murray is a civil servant in the Ministry of Information and is instructed to ignore reports of the massacres of Jews. She goes to the Isle of Man to interview different Germans to determine how much truth there is to these reports, and she meets and falls for Isaac. David Baddiel, comedian turned serious literary author, explores the ironies, horrors, and lives of those affected by the Jewish internment. The Secret Purposes has received mixed reviews with the Observer calling it "a satisfying, brave novel."
